Transfer Talk – Celtic

After a season to forget for Celtic with the league Title and hopes of ten in a row all but over, it has soon become apparent that this season should be one used for a major rebuilding job from top to bottom. We have looked all over to narrow down options in what would make a much improved Celtic squad for the rest of this season, ultimately preparing for next. Here are our thoughts on what would be effective signings for the Celts:

Declan Gallagher(29) Centre Back – Motherwell

Currently at the peak of his career so far, captaining Motherwell and leading Scotland to their first major tournament in over 20 years, Gallagher is a man of high demand. Missing an out and out leader at the back, Gallagher would fill this position with ease and bring a comfortable presence to Celtics backline with his Premiership experience, something they have reluctantly missed this season.

Ben Pearson(26) Midfielder – Preston North End

Preston Boss, Alex Neil stated yesterday that Ben Pearson has reiterated he will not be staying at the club after this season. Pearson has explained before that he is open to a move north of the border and we feel he would excel in this environment with his style of play. The former Manchester United man can play both Central and Defensive midfield and we feel the pairing of him and Ismailla Soro would be unstoppable if on form.

Ferro(23) Centre back – Benfica

The former Portuguese U21 international took over the captain’s armband at the Estadio da Luz following Ruben Dias’ move to Manchester City in 2020. However, he lost his starting place in 2020/21 following the arrival of Jan Vertonghen striking up a centre back partnership Nicolas Otamendi. It would be a win-win for both parties if Ferro chose to reignite his career in the East end of Glasgow with a proven leader and defensive rock providing much needed European experience at Celtic Park.

Adam Reach (27) Winger – Sheffield Wednesday (pre contract)

Celtic, beside rivals Rangers, have both been linked with a move for Sheffield Wednesday winger Adam Reach. The Hoops are thought to be monitoring the 27-year-old’s situation at Hillsborough, with his Owls deal up at the end of the current campaign. Celtic are keen to make a move for Reach, who can play as a left midfielder and also at left-back. Featuring just once in the Championship this season, Reach is keen for a new challenge after reaching 200 Wednesday appearances earlier this season. Neil Lennon is thought to be after a Winger this month and Reach certainly falls into that category. Valued at £2.88m, Celtic are free to discuss pre-contract terms ahead of a potential cut-price move.

Aaron Ramsey(17) Attacking midfielder – Aston Villa

Celtic are reported to be seriously interested in Aston Villa midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Reports say the Hoops are almost certain to make an offer for the 17-year-old, whose Villa Park contract expires at the end of this season. Dutch giants Ajax are also keen on the teenager, with Villa happy to offer the England under-17 international fresh terms to remain at the club. In our opinion, recruiting from the elite English academies makes a lot of sense for Celtic, as we have seen with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Olivier Ntcham in recent years.

Benji Siegrist(28) Goalkeeper– Dundee United

Benjamin Siegrist says he is ready to make the ‘next step’ in his career as he continues to be linked with a move to Celtic. The Dundee United keeper has attracted interest from several clubs around Europe due to his impressive performances for the Tangerines. However,  Neil Lennon’s side have reportedly taken pole position and been watching the 28-year-old ‘for some time’ as they look to solve their problem area in between the sticks.

Danny Ward(28) Goalkeeper– Leicester City (pre agreement)

As former manager Brendan Rodgers seems keen on out of form, Odsonne Edouard going the other way, Celtic could turn this into a deal worth working for both parties. A keeper who took the Premiership by a storm whilst on loan at Aberdeen, this would be a great signing for both sides. Reports suggest that Ward is growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of game time under Rodgers after only 3 appearances all season. With Celtic’s goalkeeper crisis at a peak, we feel Ward would be the perfect fit to fill that void.

Nathaniel Mbuku(18) Winger – Stade Reims

Celtic have reportedly approached Stade de Reims youngster Nathanael Mbuku as they look to bring a new winger to the club in January. The 18-year-old has emerged as a transfer target for the Parkhead side, but is also being pursued by Villarreal and Parma. The teenager impressed for France at the Under-17 World Cup in 2019 and has since become a regular in Ligue 1. Celtic have made an offer for the rising star as he attracts interest from around Europe. Neil Lennon is keen to add strength and depth on the wings which have been a problematic area during the first half of the season.

Marvin Friedrich(25) Centre Back– Union Berlin

At the heart of a triumphant Union defence, This man would be nothing short of a remarkable coup for Glasgow’s Green and White as they look towards a rebuild. Friedrich has scored 4 goals in 16 appearances from CB including one in Union’s win against giants, Dortmund. With Friedrich in the Bundesliga team of the season so far, helping Union to 5th place including four clean sheets and a transfer market value of £5 million, this really should be a no brainer for Celtic.
